New York Mills Honors Veterans with Veterans Day Celebration
On November 8, the New York Mills community came together to honor the bravery and sacrifices of local veterans during the school’s Veterans Day Celebration. Faculty, staff, students, and community members gathered at New York Mills Union Free School to express their deep appreciation for those who have served in the military.
As veterans and their families arrived, they were greeted by a "Hero Wall," featuring photos of local service members, including community members, friends, and family. Students in grades K-6, along with the high school chorus, took part in the ceremony by singing songs, sharing insights about the different branches of the military, and reflecting on the meaning of Veterans Day. This year’s focus was on the significance of the poppy flower, with a moment of silence to honor fallen military members.
The tribute was deeply moving, with heartfelt performances that brought the entire auditorium to its feet. Veterans were individually called to the front, where each received a gold-plated coin engraved with the message, "Thank you for your service. We are proud of you." This gesture symbolized the community's respect and admiration for their dedication and sacrifices.
The ceremony concluded with a powerful rendition of Lee Greenwood’s "God Bless the USA" ("Proud to be an American"). Following the hour-long tribute, the High School Student Council offered refreshments, bringing a warm close to a memorable day.
New York Mills Faculty and Staff extend their sincere gratitude to all who participated and supported this meaningful event. Your presence and support helped make this a day to remember.
